Sydney's Chinatown is a colourful mixture of Asian culture, shopping and great food. The area's distinctly oriental architecture, street lanterns and archways confirm it as a showpiece for Australian-Chinese culture.
Sydney’s original Chinese community settled in The Rocks, but moved here in the early 1900s.
Many of these people were market gardeners and traders, and shops and restaurants naturally followed, especially in Dixon Street, the heart of Chinatown.
The eateries in Chinatown serve up authentic Asian dishes throughout the day and late into the night.
Although the many food halls here leave little to be desired with respect to ambiance, they make up for it through their variety of dishes and very reasonable prices.
Chinatown is an easy 15-minute walk from Central railway station and is accessible by Lightrail, which operates from Central to Haymarket.
