The Brett Whiteley Gallery is managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and was bequeathed by the estate of Brett Whiteley upon his death. Brett Whiteley was one of Australia's most famous modern artists.
The Brett Whiteley Gallery is located in Surry Hills and is where Brett Whiteley, one of Australia's most gifted, best known and controversial artists of the 20th Century lived for the last 5 years of his life.
He bought the property here in 1985 and converted it from a warehouse. After his death in 1992 his home studio was opened to the public as a museum dedicated to his life and work.
His extensive body of paintings and sculptures are held in major collections around the world including the Tate in London, the Museum D'Art Moderne in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Every year in September the studio hosts the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, which was established by mother in 1999, in honour of Brett Whiteley's work.
